Lovely piece of kit, all that I could wish for in a lathe

I bought this lathe to replace a VB36 and a Poolwood lathe because I need to downsize my workshop. I though that I would miss the VB but I can honestly say that this machine is so good that I will not miss the VB. it is exceptionally well built and can handle large blanks with no difficulty. It is quiet and very smooth running

  3. Dean Hammonds

    Exceeded all my expectations

Absolutely amazing machine, it has transformed the way I work, as Simon says in his video “It’s the only lathe you will ever need” As ever Simons service and delivery were impeccable . Thank you

  4. Glenn Cracknell

    World Class Customer Service

Firstly the lathe, I have worked on a few different lathes over the years and been lucky enough to use some of the big US lathes we all see on YouTube. In my opinion the Stratos XL is the best, everything has been machined to very high tolerances and you can feel that when you operate the machine.

Secondly the customer service has been world class, kind friendly and very responsive, even during their workshop move. I always recommend Hope Woodturning during conversation and the people that come for tuition.

  5. Martin Wright

    Monster machine.

Bought this lathe about 6 months ago. Spent a long time looking at it before going ahead. Changed from a Record Power Maxi 2. This is the next level without a doubt. Huge weight and can handle vitually anything you can throw at it. Massive roots to the smallest twig. Worth every penny for the more serious woodturners. If you have the money don’t bother looking anywhere else. You won’t be disappointed.

  6. Richard Forrest-Hill

    What a Machine.

This brute of a machine is everything it is said to be, and more. The build quality is outstanding and you immediately know you are using a machine that is far and away the best in its class.

Thankyou Simon for all of your assistance, service and support, first class as always.

bench bed

Made of solid gray cast iron and weighing 96 kg. The chamfered edges reduce the risk of injury. It features an integrated tool holder on the rear. A mounting surface for a bench bed extension is located in the center of the front end. This provides, for example, 50 mm of additional center height with the headstock rotated.

headstock

The Stratos XL is powered by a powerful 2.2 kW / 3 HP (230 V) motor. Like the Stratos FU-230, the headstock is rotatable and adjustable and has five locking points at 0° (standard), 30°, 60°, 90°, and 180°. The spindle head features a 24-step indexing system and a large handwheel that improves workflow on the machine. Three different speed ranges are available. The belt can be conveniently adjusted on the front of the machine, and the current speed is shown on a digital display on the front. The machine features a large bearing spacing of 290 mm, which, combined with a total weight of 320 kg, ensures incredibly smooth running, even under heavy loads. The headstock also features a mounting bracket with a hole for accessories such as extraction systems.

Spindle connection

Standardized M33x3.5 mm thread, inner cone of the spindle MK2 and ASR safety groove.

Mobile control box

The magnetic control box can be mounted anywhere on the bench. It features infinitely variable speed control and forward and reverse operation. When the machine is operating in reverse, an orange warning LED illuminates. The green start button is also illuminated green when active.

Base frame

Made of solid gray cast iron. Each leg weighs 41.5 kg. With a total of 83 kg, the base frame contributes significantly to extremely smooth running, even with larger turning diameters. The blue base frame also features a special, vibration-damping design. Finally, both legs rest on a solid, height-adjustable extra leg, allowing the bench to be adjusted to your height. There are a total of six different attachment points for the optional bench bed extension or external swivel. This allows the external swivel to be used not only at the front, but also to the right and left of the bench bed.

tailstock

The tailstock features a 150 mm quill stroke. A graduated scale on the quill allows for precise drilling. The extremely durable trapezoidal thread is conveniently operated with a bearing-mounted crank. A dual-bearing, live MK2 center with integrated thrust ring is included. The tailstock glides smoothly across the bench bed and can be quickly locked or released with a large locking lever.

Frequency converter

The frequency converter is the heart of the machine. It ensures consistent power transmission at any speed. It also guarantees slow and controlled start-up and stop, which can be adjusted for normal and particularly heavy workpieces. The frequency converter also features two 230 V/800 W outlets for powering work lights, for example.

    Exceeded all my expectations

Absolutely amazing machine, it has transformed the way I work, as Simon says in his video “It’s the only lathe you will ever need” As ever Simons service and delivery were impeccable . Thank you

    What a Machine.

This brute of a machine is everything it is said to be, and more. The build quality is outstanding and you immediately know you are using a machine that is far and away the best in its class.

Thankyou Simon for all of your assistance, service and support, first class as always.
